If I find anything else that I could recommend to you I will share it with you! I feel that I should read more about the Catholic faith as well. Great article!
I haven’t read the book yet, but I have heard really good things about it. What interest me the most is that it has practical philosophical questions that the person who reads the book can apply to their everyday life. It also fully defines and describes what happiness is.
In addition, I feel that happiness is associated with joy which is one of the fruits of the spirit. I feel that it’s very important that people learn more about why it’s important to be happy because then people will gain a more positive outlook on life. I hope I have answered your question.
Church history. This book is without equal in explaining doctrine of the trinity in its historical, civilizational, philosophical, existential weight: Christianity and Classical Culture: A Study of Thought and Action from Augustus to Augustine. By Charles Norris Cochraine. Jaroslav Pelikans 5 volume history of christianity is a classic. If you want to get deep into the more philosophical side then maybe check out Eric Voegelins "Order and History."
Regarding Theology. Baltimore Catechism III is excellent. The Catechism of Trent is more thorough. You should pick one book of mystical\aescetic theology. The Three Ages of The Interior Life by Fr Garrigou-Legrange is a classic. This book is even better in some regards: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1NKR-ladcpdHY2gOrRCUk9kAUbOdaTawU/view?usp=drive_link
From the point of view of grasping the catholic faith from a philosophical point of view, Chestertons apologetic works are great: Heretics, Orthodoxy, The Well and the Shadows. The Thing: Why I became a Catholic are all excellent. His biography of St Thomas Aquinas is basically perfection.
Philosophy: definitely Plato´s republic. Aristotle´s "Nicomachean Ethics" and "Metaphysics." From this basis you can start to comprehend the western philosophical and theological tradition. Augustine´s "On Christian Doctrine" is an excellent short work.
Its cool that you are doing classes like this. A long term goal for my substack is to start offering classes on thomistic philosphy/theology. id be interested in hearing how you are doing this. you had 30,000 students? what?
Wow, first off, thank you. This is incredible. I want to read all of them. I will prioritize adds after I finish the ones I have on the go. The theology and philosophy recommendations filling in that gap thanks especially.
Regarding your teaching goals - awesome. I'm starting with a short online course as it is my bread and butter, have created or helped create dozens. Happy to share my course design process. After the course is launched, will reevaluate - we can repurpose the course into other formats. How do you envision your classes?
The 30,000 students number isn't mine, though maybe one day! That's there because I'm taking an existing open-source course (that has had 30,000 students graduate) and adjusting it to speak to a Catholic or Catholic-curious audience.
i think i would run them like a grad seminar on teams. 12 ppl max. meet once a week for a 3 hours. maybe 30 min lecture to start. id start with neoscholastic thomism. maybe branch out if that goes well. yeah id be interested in seeing ur design process. thanks.
Wow this is really impressive! You have motivated me to possibly create my own yearly reading list as a new year’s resolution for next year!
I have found a philosophical book on happiness that I will recommend to you:
